1st World Mariachi Congress, Mexico City: Where the Heart of Mexico Beats

INTRODUCTION

Mariachi is a fundamental element of Mexican culture. As a traditional music and an intrinsic part of popular culture, it represents the heritage of a centuries-old tradition. This music conveys values that foster and strengthen the natural heritage of Mexican regions and the country's history. The transcendence of Mariachi has crossed borders and is now adopted by different countries around the world, becoming a true phenomenon as, despite distance and in many cases language, they interpret Mariachi music with traditional instruments and attire.

Since 2011, UNESCO has named "Mariachi, music of strings, voice, and trumpet" an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This declaration validates the importance of these musical groups as a living tradition and, as civil society, commits us to its protection, preservation, and promotion.

The 1st World Mariachi Congress, Mexico City, "Where the Heart of Mexico Beats," is part of the strategies for safeguarding Mariachi, promoting our traditions and musical culture, and generating a tourist benefit that will be institutionalized and celebrated year after year.

It is organized by the National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism of Mexico City, in coordination with the Mexican Mariachi Union A.C., the Society of Mexican Authors and Composers SACM, and the Secretary of Culture of Mexico City. It is an event built through a participatory process with musicians.

During the 1st World Mariachi Congress, Mexico City, "Where the Heart of Mexico Beats," musicians from different regions of the world and the country will gather in the Mexican capital from November 6 to 10, 2024, to be part of an interesting cultural, artistic, and academic program.

The opening of the Congress will take place in the iconic Plaza Garibaldi. The concept will be the artistic presentation of national and foreign mariachi groups in important venues, stages, and plazas of Mexico City, to close with a Grand Gala featuring the Mariachi América de Jesús Rodríguez de Híjar and the best Mariachi in the World, the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, accompanied by the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra. The event will be held at the Roberto Cantoral Cultural Center theater at 7:00 PM.

In parallel, musical performance clinics of the various instruments traditionally used in mariachi groups will be held, and national and foreign musicians can participate.

The Congress activities will include popular festivities in the Coyoacán borough and the participation of hundreds of mariachis playing in unison to break the World Mariachi Record, this at the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome.

In this first edition of the World Mariachi Congress, we will be joined as Ambassador by singer and actor Pedro Fernández. As special guests, we will have musicians who, through their careers, have become living legends and an inspiration for new generations of Mariachis.
